Triple triumph for Pediatrics at McMaster PGME Awards
McMaster’s Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) program at the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine equips the next generation of doctors with the knowledge and skills needed to serve communities and advance health systems in Canada and beyond.
The program’s success in empowering medical trainees is enabled by the dedication of faculty, residents, and program administrators from across the Faculty of Health Sciences.
Since 2017, PGME has honoured these individuals for their contributions to residency education with the annual McMaster PGME Awards.
In June, three members of the Department of Pediatrics were recognized with individual awards for their respective roles.
Dr. Rahul Chanchlani
Rahul Chanchlani, a researcher and director of the pediatric nephrology fellowship program received the PGME Faculty Mentor Award.
He was recognized for his advocacy for his residents through mentorship, support for research, fostering a positive learning environment, and promoting resident wellness.
His learners say he provides guidance beyond the clinical setting, by engaging them in quality improvement initiatives, and scholarly activities, enabling them to contribute to advancements in child health and develop essential leadership skills.
“I always strive to provide my learners with connections to the right source, high-level feedback, and the opportunity to learn the basics of research skills. It’s a win-win for both of us,” Chanchlani said.
Dr. Sara Markovic
Sara Markovic, from the Kitchener-Waterloo (KW) campus, received the PGME Resident Leader Award for exceptional teaching, innovative curriculum development, and dedicated advocacy.
Cognizant of the need for centralized educational resources, Markovic developed a repository of pediatric presentations for junior learners and medical students, facilitating easier access to valuable teaching materials.
She credits her role models within the Department of Pediatrics at the Grand River Hospital and McMaster University for inspiring her to take on a leadership role within her residency program.
“Their passion for medicine and dedication to teaching have enriched my learning experience and inspired a deep sense of responsibility to pay it forward,” Markovic said.
Leeza Riediger
Leeza Riediger, also from the KW site, was this year’s PGME Program Administrator Award recipient.
She was acknowledged for her role in fostering a positive learning environment while supporting and advocating for her residents.
“I’m constantly motivated to be my best to ensure everything runs smoothly,” Riediger said. “I thrive on the challenge of juggling multiple tasks and deadlines, knowing that my support contributes to the residents’ success.”
Chanchlani, Markovic and Riediger received their awards at a special ceremony on June 18, 2024.
