Clinical training is offered through McMaster’s Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship program. This is a one- or two-year structured program that attracts self-funded candidates from around the world. We provide well-supervised training in inpatient and outpatient general nephrology, peritoneal dialysis, and hemodialysis.

Our goal is to create a rigorous learning environment that is tailored to each trainee’s goals and objectives. Our program provides ample opportunities for learners to self direct their training including the flexibility to choose the area(s) they would like to focus and build expertise. We benefit from the strength of the faculty members of the Division of Pediatric Nephrology who collaborate with learners to achieve their clinical, academic and research goals.

Upon completing the training, McMaster University’s Postgraduate Medical Education will issue a certificate of completion.

We are seeking candidates who have a keen interest in pediatric nephrology and who have demonstrated a strong work ethic. Fellows must be eligible for a certificate authorizing postgraduate education from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). The CPSO requires the applicant to be recognized as a medical specialist/family physician in the jurisdiction where the applicant has been practicing medicine. Trainees apply to the CPSO only after they have been accepted into the fellowship program.

International applicants with foreign government sponsorship must apply through their sponsorship bureau and not directly to the program or McMaster’s Postgraduate Medical Education office.

McMaster Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) provides an environment where learners can develop the skills to become expert physicians and leaders in health care.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to secure a funding source/sponsorship. McMaster Postgraduate Medical Education currently has sponsorship agreements with certain institutions in the following countries:

  • Bahrain

  • Oman
  • Saudi Arabia
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Qatar

Nephrology Clinical

Clinical

Our learners are available Monday to Friday during the day to attend clinics, rounds on admissions to our nephrology service, consult on inpatients, and attend educational rounds. Throughout the fellowship, trainees will participate in weekly chronic kidney disease rounds, academic journal clubs, and regular radiology-urology-nephrology and kidney biopsy rounds.

In the first year of training, fellows will provide comprehensive, tertiary-level care for children with kidney disease. In addition to inpatient care, fellows will also participate in a number of ambulatory services including general nephrology clinics, chronic kidney disease clinics, pre- and post- transplant clinics and specialized kidney stone, hypertension, and urinary malformation clinics. Fellows will also experience hands on training with hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients. After the first six months of training, learners will be responsible for taking one week of call per month including night (from home) and weekend call.

During the second year of training, fellows will continue to develop and further improve their skills. Learners can self-direct their training to concentrate on the areas they are most interested in including the option to complete electives at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton or the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Our program is located at McMaster Children’s Hospital, one of the largest pediatric health-care facilities in Canada. We are part of a dedicated, hardworking, multidisciplinary team which includes four pediatric nephrologists, a nurse practitioner, two clinic nurses, two hemodialysis nurses, a dietician, and a social worker. The program also works closely with our adult nephrology colleagues at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and certain time blocks can be completed there as dictated by our trainees’ interests.

Nephrology Research

Research

Trainees have ample opportunities to participate in and build a clinical research portfolio. Our division is highly involved in innovative and collaborative clinical research in the following areas: hypertension, acute kidney injury, kidney stones, glomerular diseases, and transplant. We have received several local, provincial, and national grants as principal and co-investigators to fund our work. Under our tutelage, trainees have been able to obtain intramural funding, present abstracts in various national and international conferences and write manuscripts as first authors.
