Overview
We are an integral part of McMaster Children’s Hospital and work in close collaboration with other divisions including our surgical colleagues in pediatric urology, as well as allied health-care workers. Our division consists of a highly skilled multidisciplinary team of nurses, a dietitian, a social worker, administrative staff, and physicians who work together to provide excellent clinical care and resources to our patients. We are also deeply connected with community partners and provide consultations and educational sessions to patients, families, and community-based physicians.

Education
The Division of Pediatric Nephrology is actively involved in teaching of medical students, postgraduate pediatric residents, and subspecialty trainees in pediatric and adult nephrology. All pediatric trainees rotate through a two- or four-week nephrology rotation and are responsible for rounding on inpatients and consults, reviewing clinic patients, and preparing an educational presentation for our journal club. Our nursing and dietitian colleagues also preceptor nursing and nutrition students who rotate through our division for a well-rounded clinical experience.
We have a one- or two-year clinical fellowship program, which attracts self-funded candidates from different countries. We offer well-supervised training for inpatient and outpatient general nephrology, peritoneal dialysis, and hemodialysis. Kidney transplant patients undergo surgery at the provincial centre and return to our care for chronic post-transplant follow-up. We work closely with our adult nephrology colleagues at St Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, and fellows may complete certain rotations there. The program provides opportunities to build expertise in medical teaching through programs offered by McMaster University.
