PICU Liber8 team receives Dr. Madan Roy Award for Quality Improvement in Patient Care
The PICU Liber8 team is the 2023 recipient of the Dr. Madan Roy Award for outstanding contributions to Quality Improvement in Patient Care.
This award, named in tribute to the exemplary service of Dr. Madan Roy, a general pediatrician and professor of pediatrics, celebrates a profound commitment to McMaster Children’s Hospital and McMaster University’s Department of Pediatrics.
The award acknowledges individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership in advancing quality improvement initiatives that impact patient care locally, regionally, and globally.
Comprising an interdisciplinary group of physicians, nurses, allied health, patients, and family partners, the PICU Liber8 team is engaged in improving outcomes by enhancing the functional recovery of infants and children in McMaster’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
The recognition stems from the successful development and implementation of an innovative early rehabilitation bundle (“PICU Liber8”) designed to liberate critically ill children from complications and optimize their recovery.
The bundle is underpinned by evidence-based guidelines and a context-specific implementation plan focused on patient comfort, sedation stewardship, early mobilization, sleep hygiene, good nutrition, and family engagement.
The team established multi-media resources to ensure that Liber8 is sustainable and will continue to support the high turnover of interprofessional clinicians within the PICU, ultimately striving to provide the best care for patients.
Since implementation, the PICU Liber8 team’s initiative produced significant enhancements in the quality of patient care in the PICU, effectively impacting outcomes that are crucial to patients, families, and the institution.
It was announced that the PICU Liber8 team was the recipient of the Dr. Madan Roy Award on Monday, September 12.
