The Dent Legacy
Dr. Peter B. Dent is fondly remembered as a luminary in the field of pediatric rheumatology, renowned for his compassionate clinical care and innovative research. His enduring legacy includes the pivotal role he played in the inception of what is now known as McMaster Children’s Hospital in Hamilton and the adjacent Ronald McDonald House.
Following Peter’s passing in September of 2021, the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation came together to establish a unique collaborative memorial fund in his honour. Through a matching investment from the Department of Pediatrics and generous contributions from friends, family, and colleagues across the community, The Dr. Peter B. Dent Memorial Fund was created. Remarkably, it raised half a million dollars in less than a year – a testament to Peter Dent’s esteemed reputation and the extraordinary generosity of our community.
Thanks to this innovative funding, three programs have been instituted in Peter’s memory. In 2022, the Department of Pediatrics hosted the inaugural Dr. Peter B. Dent Memorial Lecture and the following year celebrated the inaugural recipients of the Peter B. Dent Memorial Resident Scholarship in Pediatrics and the Peter B. Dent Memorial Research Impact Fund.
Through these initiatives, and inspired by Peter’s unwavering dedication to improving the lives of children and families, McMaster University ensures his vision and contributions endure for generations to come.
