McMaster University’s Pediatric Emergency Medicine Residency Program offers a curriculum that is designed to meet the Royal College standards but allows residents to pursue areas of interest.

A minimum of 13 blocks of the training period are spent in the Pediatric Emergency Medicine rotation split evenly between years 1 and 2, in addition to mandatory rotations in Point-of-Care ultrasound, sports medicine, toxicology and longitudinal sessions in admin/leadership.

Residents from pediatrics residencies pursue mandatory rotations in orthopedics, plastics, general emergency medicine, and trauma, whereas residents in emergency medicine complete rotations in neonatology, pediatric critical care, and pediatric medicine.

Additional elective time is available to meet the learning objectives of the trainee.

Fellows benefit from the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine’s active research group that engages in ongoing collaborations with Pediatric Emergency Research Canada for clinical research and a growing portfolio of international health and education research.

Fellows are expected to complete a scholarly project during their training and present their findings at a local, national, or international conference. Fellows meet early on with the program director to identify areas of interest and subsequently identify a faculty supervisor who will guide them through the scholarly process, question development, methodology, data analysis and submission for presentation. The Department of Pediatrics and McMaster University provide many research award opportunities to help support scholarly work.
