The Department of Pediatrics is dedicated to the education of its faculty, learners, and patients. As leaders in this field, we have been recognized for our innovation in education through local and international awards of excellence that celebrate our teachers and mentors.

We welcome trainees from across Canada and around the world and stand by our reputation as leaders in education while providing a diverse and inclusive environment.

We are privileged to host medical learners from various disciplines at all levels of training. Medical students from McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine routinely rotate through our department. Our postgraduate offerings include the core pediatric residency program, pediatric neurology residency program, 11 subspeciality training and fellowship programs, and the Clinician Investigator Program for residents. We are also home to Canada’s first and only graduate degree in Child Life and Psychosocial Care.

We encourage collaboration, both within and outside of our department, which enables valuable links across the university and hospital networks. Our connection to the Program for Faculty Development provides learners and faculty with access to a variety of workshops, certificate programs, and resources. We work closely with the McMaster Education Research, Innovation and Theory program to foster health education scholarship. Faculty partner with education scientists to promote scholarship in all our pursuits and the department provides opportunities and grants to support work in this area.

Patients and families are central to our mission. Their perspectives are sought and brought into the care we provide; the research we develop; and the education we deliver. Within McMaster Children’s Hospital’s diverse patient population of over 2.5 million, our teams are powerful patient advocates who initiate and collaborate on patient education projects.

Learner and faculty wellness are important. We create opportunities for reflection, actively seek feedback for change, and design programs to enhance mentorship and support for trainees and faculty alike.
