We provide clinical teaching on a daily basis to undergraduate and postgraduate learners including pediatric residents, medical microbiology residents, and adult infectious disease fellows. We also regularly conduct lecture-based and small-group teaching to a wide variety of trainees in multiple programs.

In addition to providing daily consultations for pediatric and adult inpatients, we hold weekly outpatient clinics; these clinics include general pediatric infectious disease clinic, pediatric tuberculosis clinic, and a specialized immunization clinic focusing on vaccination of high-risk children and assessment of adverse reaction following immunization.

Further, our faculty member, Dr. Sarah Khan, is the assistant medical director for Hamilton Health Sciences and coordinates infection prevention and controls as well as antimicrobial stewardship program activities at McMaster Children’s Hospital.

Research is a strength of our division. Our members lead a number of studies focusing on the prevention, diagnosis, and management of respiratory infections, sepsis, urinary infections, and enteric infections. The work in these targeted areas complement additional studies evaluating the appropriate use of antimicrobials more broadly within the scope of pediatric antimicrobial stewardship.

We have received funding as principal investigators from Hamilton Health Sciences, the Institute for Infectious Disease Research, the PSI Foundation, the Innovation Fund (Ministry of Health and Ontario Medical Association), and Grand Challenges Canada. Our members are also frequent co-investigators on trials funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Canadian Immunization Research Network, and other large granting agencies.
