Message from the Chair & Chief, Pediatrics

The Department of Pediatrics at McMaster University and McMaster Children’s Hospital is home to over 200 pediatricians, scientists, teachers, and trainees whose collective mission is to improve the well-being of children and their families – both locally, and around the world.

Our mission is underpinned by values of collaboration, innovation, compassion, and respect. This culture informs the way we engage, and the result is a supportive and vibrant academic environment where, we believe, almost anything is possible.

Our faculty contribute to 19 divisions that reflect the comprehensive spectrum of pediatric subspecialties. We provide our clinical expertise to the infants, children, and youth who visit us at McMaster Children’s Hospital and the Ron Joyce Children’s Health Centre, and through partner institutions across the Hamilton Health Sciences, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, and Niagara Health. Collectively, we serve a population of 2.5 million people from south central Ontario and the surrounding regions.

The vitality of our education programs is key to our success. Our core pediatric residency program and nine subspecialty residency and fellowship programs welcome 110 active trainees. Our award-winning educators create pathways that enable learners to realize personalized career objectives while developing the next generation of clinical and academic leaders. Our graduate program in Child Life and Pediatric Psychosocial Care is the first of its kind in Canada and we are immensely proud to lead this field.

Drawing on McMaster University’s global reputation for research-intensity, our interdisciplinary research teams address diverse health conditions including childhood disability, neuromuscular disease, cancer, obesity, and consequences of premature birth, as well as others. As trainees are highly valued, undergraduates, medical students, residents, and fellows from across the Faculty of Health Sciences and the University contribute to clinical and pre-clinical child health research in the department.

Faculty in the Department of Pediatrics are leaders in their respective fields and help drive the administration of our institutions and centres. We frequently leverage our positions to advocate for change within our healthcare system and government agencies to better serve children and families. We often share our voices and expertise with local and national media to promote best approaches to pediatric wellness in our communities.

Whether you are a prospective trainee, clinician, teacher, researcher, or public partner we welcome your contributions and encourage you to join us in our mission of advancing the health and wellbeing of our world’s most precious asset – our children.
