Third annual Dr. Peter B. Dent Memorial Lecture on Thursday, September 19
The third annual Dr. Peter B. Dent Memorial Lecture will be held on Thursday, September 19, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Named in honour of the late Peter Dent, a visionary leader who was instrumental in establishing McMaster Children’s Hospital and the adjacent Ronald McDonald House, this annual event highlights the latest research in pediatric medicine.
“We are forever indebted to Peter for his vision and leadership, which have immeasurably grown our capacity to serve the children and families of our region,” said Ereny Bassilious, Associate Chair of Education in the Department of Pediatrics.
After Dent’s passing in 2021, a collaborative memorial fund was created with the support of the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation. Thanks to generous donations from friends, family, and colleagues, along with matching funds from the Department of Pediatrics, an impressive half a million dollars was raised. This investment now supports several initiatives in Dent’s name.
The 2024 lecture
This year’s guest speaker is Ori Scott, a scientist at The Hospital for Sick Children. Her presentation is titled, “STAT1 gain-of-function: Precision medicine insights into human immunity.” The goals of her presentation are to explain what primary immune dysregulation disorders are and to show how combining different lab techniques and clinical methods can help better understand a specific immune disorder called STAT1 gain-of-function.
Event details
The event is hybrid, allowing attendees to join in person or participate virtually via Zoom.
After the lecture, attendees are invited to a reception in McMaster’s Farncombe Atrium, where the 2024 award recipients of the Dent Memorial Resident Scholarship in Pediatrics and the Dent Memorial Research Impact Fund will be announced.
“Peter would have been profoundly humbled by all this work done in his honour,” said Diane Dent, Dent’s wife, regarding the annual memorial lecture.
This is a ticketed event. Registration is required here.
