On Saturday, March 2, 2024, McMaster University’s Department of Pediatrics researchers were recognized at the annual Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation (HHSF) Gala. This high-energy party featured live performances by 1990s hip-hop music pioneers The Sugarhill Gang and raised funds to support research in children’s and women’s health.
Amid the celebrations, plans were unveiled to establish a groundbreaking research institute exclusively dedicated to advancing the frontiers of children’s and women’s health. This pivotal initiative, led in partnership with McMaster University, reflects a commitment to provide sustained support for innovative studies in these critical areas.
During the gala, two pediatric researchers, who are physicians at McMaster Children’s Hospital (MCH), were granted $25,000 each to advance their research projects with a direct impact on children’s health.
Rahul Chanchlani, a pediatric nephrologist at MCH and an associate professor of pediatrics at McMaster University, was recognized for his ALERT-BP study [Watch Video]. This initiative aims to develop a risk prediction model for the early detection of high blood pressure in children.
Jenna Dowhaniuk, a pediatric gastroenterologist and assistant professor of pediatrics, showcased her study entitled CELIAC-Q KIDS [Watch Video], a patient-reported outcome measure for pediatric celiac disease.
The event drew attendance from generous community sponsors, physicians, researchers, staff, and leaders from McMaster University and McMaster Children’s Hospital.
Funds raised will continue to fuel crucial research initiatives across many disciplines in children’s and women’s health. The commitment and support from sponsors and stakeholders underscore the collective dedication to advancing healthcare and well-being for these populations.
The establishment of the new research institute marks a significant milestone, promising sustained progress in addressing the unique healthcare needs of children and their families.
