Overview
The Division of Pediatric Critical Care is deeply committed to child and family health. Faculty members and trainees are often found at the bedside of critically ill children at all hours of the day and night. Their dedication is matched by the exceptional group of multi-professional health-care providers, residents, and fellows they work alongside.
Their unique, hands-on perspective of the spectrum of child health and family relations positions them well to serve as strong advocates for children everywhere. Critical care faculty and trainees take this experience beyond their direct clinical environment and use it to help innovate the future of critical care and child health.

Education
The Division of Pediatric Critical Care plays an important role in postgraduate medical education at McMaster University. Resident physicians from various training programs, with skills ranging from novice to expert, routinely rotate through the Intensive Care Unit. The size and flow of the unit enables learners to develop general foundational critical care skills as well as focus on specific or advanced individual objectives.
The Division of Pediatric Critical Care has an active fellowship program that is accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The program engages in the dedicated critical care training for both Canadian and International medical graduates.

Clinical
The core of the division’s hospital work resides within the 12-bed pediatric intensive care unit, located at McMaster Children’s Hospital. Clinical faculty all attend the unit on a regular rotating basis, 24-hours per day, seven-days per week. In addition, the division is responsible for leading and administering the hospital’s critical care rapid response team, known as the PACE team. To further support hospital acute care services, the division routinely participates in activities and committees related to acute care services, including code blue, early warning systems, organ donation, chronic ventilation, simulation, and regional critical care.
