Clerkship

The Pediatrics core clerkship is a four week rotation during which students have exposure to ambulatory and inpatient pediatric care. Education is provided on normal developmental milestones and growth, health maintenance, disease prevention and common pediatric clinical presentations.  There is a focus on pediatric clinical skill development, specifically focused interviewing, physical examination and clinical problem solving. Three structured academic half days include a one-hour academic session followed by a case-based tutorial.  In addition, students engage in peer-teaching, giving presentations on common pediatric clinical conditions.

Assessment of the pediatrics core rotation includes a mid-rotation and final clinical evaluation and a final examination. Successful completion of the rotation requires exposure to all pediatric-specific “Essential Clinical Encounters” (ECEs) along with completion of pediatric e-learning modules (Aquifer) and the six pediatric MacDOTs (direct-observed tasks).

Students return to Pediatrics later in their clerkship year for 2 weeks of Transition to Residency. During the senior clerk rotation, students experience subspecialty, inpatient/outpatient, and community experiences where they will have opportunities to demonstrate progress in knowledge and skills gained in their core rotation.
